What it helps

Where it works.

Good fit, not a fit

Who it’s for, and who it isn’t.

A good fit if

  • Sun spots and uneven tone on lighter skin tones
  • Redness and small visible vessels
  • You can stay out of the sun before and after

Not a fit if

  • Deeper skin tones, because of the risk of burns and dark marks. Microneedling or a peel may suit you better
  • A recent tan or self-tan
  • Pregnancy, or light-sensitizing medicines
  • A mark that is changing or that a doctor has not seen. We will refer you first

How it works

In plain words.

Intense pulsed light, or IPL, is a flash of broad-spectrum light. It is absorbed by brown pigment and redness in your skin. Spots usually darken for about a week, then flake away. It is not a laser, but it does similar work on the surface of your skin.

Your visit

What actually happens.

  1. Skin check

We check that your skin tone suits IPL, and look at any spots. A changing mark gets referred to a doctor first.

  2. See your total

Price first, including any add-on. If IPL does not suit your skin, we will say so and suggest another option.

  3. Treatment

Cool gel and goggles, then flashes of light across your skin. About 30 minutes.

  4. Aftercare

Spots go darker, then flake off in about a week. Use SPF every day and stay out of direct sun.

Risks and safety

The part most sites skip.

Common

Redness, and a feeling like mild sunburn for a few hours. Spots darken and flake before fading.

Less common

Swelling, crusting, and temporary darker or lighter patches.

Serious

Burns, blisters and lasting pigment changes, especially on deeper or tanned skin. This is why we check suitability first.

FAQ

Real questions.

Why not on darker skin?

IPL targets pigment, and it cannot tell a spot from the skin around it if your skin has more pigment. That raises the risk of burns and dark marks, so we suggest a different treatment.

Will the spots come back?

They can, especially with sun. Daily SPF is what keeps them away.

Why did my spots get darker?

That is expected. They usually darken, then flake away in about a week.

Is this a laser?

No. IPL is a flash of broad-spectrum light, while a laser is a single wavelength.

How many will I need?

Usually 3–5 sessions, a month apart. Some people are happy sooner.

Can I tan before my session?

Please do not. Tanned skin raises the risk of burns, and we may need to reschedule.
